Liverpool well placed to sign ‘mega-money’ striker – expert

Noel Whelan has suggested Liverpool could consider spending “mega-money” on an “out-and-out striker” this summer as their disappointing record in big games continues.

The former Leeds hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Jurgen Klopp could look to emulate Man City’s capture of Erling Haaland this summer.

Liverpool failed to score in each of the three cup finals they have took part in this term – winning the FA Cup and League Cup on penalty kicks and losing out 1-0 in the Champions League on Saturday (28 May).

The Merseysiders also drew each of their six matches against the Premier League’s top four sides – a record which ultimately cost them the title.

According to Fabrizio Romano (29 May), Sadio Mane has decided to leave Liverpool with Bayern Munich the frontrunners for his signature.

Whelan suggested the Reds should look to sign a “John Aldridge or Ian Rush type player” to replace the Senegalese star.

“There may well be a thought of getting a natural number nine this summer after looking at that,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Especially after Man City have gone out and done just that already.

“I think it would certainly help them break teams down and score these all-important goals.

“I’d really like to see Liverpool go out, spend mega-money and bring in an out-and-out striker now.

“They’d really benefit from having a John Aldridge or an Ian Rush type player. They’ve certainly got the players in that attack to create the right chances.”

Liverpool

Liverpool have already completed the capture of young winger Fabio Carvalho this summer.

The Reds netted 94 league goals during the 2021-22 campaign – five shy of league winners Man City.
