Alexis Mac Allister is on the right track to earning a new Liverpool contract as he shows some fine form on the international stage.

Mac Allister's future on Merseyside has been plunged into uncertainty in recent weeks after he revealed his disappointment at not being offered a new contract.

His current deal is set to expire in 2028, with an extension not believed to be in Liverpool's plans right now.

The 27-year-old has continued to be a regular in the starting eleven since Andoni Iraola's arrival and has shown some improved form this season.

His latest performance on international duty shows that he should be able to earn a new deal at Anfield in the coming months.

Mac Allister was key to Argentina's 4-0 friendly win over Bolivia on Wednesday night, going on to be praised heavily by their national media.

Alexis Mac Allister tipped to emulate Lionel Messi by Argentine media

Argentina kicked off their 2026-27 international campaign with a comfortable win over fellow South Americans Bolivia in Cordoba on Wednesday night.

Mac Allister is a regular starter for his country and he lined up alongside Ipswich's Exequiel Palacios in central midfield for the outing, providing an assist for Lautaro Martinez's 19th-minute opener.

The Liverpool star emerged with 89 per cent pass accuracy, one chance created, four touches in the opposition box, five ball recoveries and six duels won in 74 minutes.

He was subsequently praised by Argentine media, as TYC Sports reviewed his performance by writing: "The heartbeat of the team: always well-positioned, always an option, always ready to link up play. A modern central midfielder who moves up and down the pitch, carries the ball forward and back, gets involved and involves others. In my view, he should wear the number 10 for Argentina, just as he does at Liverpool."

While La Nacion were also complimentary of how Mac Allister played, saying: "He doesn’t need to play a great match to be effective and influential. He provided the assist for Lautaro’s 1–0 goal. He linked up well in central midfield with Palacios. He uses the freedom he has to roam across different areas of the pitch judiciously. He has become a member of the old guard and still has plenty left in the tank."

Alexis Mac Allister 'unhappy' as Liverpool make new contract decision

What has Mac Allister said about his Liverpool contract situation?

Mac Allister is sure to earn fresh terms at Liverpool if he continues in his current vein of form upon returning to the club after the international break.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Mac Allister is unhappy at Liverpool and could push to leave the club if he is not offered an extension soon.

The 27-year-old previously admitted that he was "very sad" at not being given a new deal, but played down those comments in his latest interview on international duty.

He said: "There isn’t a final decision set in stone. The reality is that I still have two years left on my contract. In that press conference, because people were asking me about my future, I spoke purely from emotion. I wasn’t judging the club or anything like that.

"In the end, they are the ones who run things and make the decisions, which is completely fine by me. From my side, I really enjoy being where I am. Hopefully, I’ll stay for more years, but if it ends up being just two, that’s fine too."
