Darwin Nunez has reached out to Ronald Araujo on social media after the new Liverpool signing made his debut at Anfield.

Liverpool's summer window has been slow and steady after they broke the bank with several big signings last year.

An injury to Joe Gomez and uncertainty around the fitness status of both Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet led the Reds to explore signing a centre-back earlier this month.

Barcelona defender Araujo joined on loan for the 2026-27 campaign last week, with an option to make the move permanent next year for around £47million.

He made his debut for the club off the bench on Sunday in their 2-0 win over Serie A side Como at Anfield.

Araujo took to Instagram after the game, with Nunez reaching out amid rumours that he could return to Anfield this summer.

Nunez divided opinion throughout his time at Liverpool as numerous standout performances were flanked by moments of madness and heaps of missed chances.

The Uruguay striker left Merseyside for Al Hilal last summer, and scored nine goals in 24 appearances but failed to feature for his new club for the final few months of the campaign after being de-registered from their squad.

He has been touted to return to Anfield this summer, but does look to be closing in on reuniting with former teammate Mo Salah in a move to Trabzonspor.

Nunez and Araujo are international teammates and close friends, and the striker replied with red heart and clapping emojis to the new Liverpool star's Instagram message after his debut on Sunday evening.

What has Nunez told Araujo about Liverpool?

Sources previously exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Newcastle had registered an interest in signing Nunez to solve their striker issues, but they are unlikely to pursue a deal in the coming weeks.

Andoni Iraola is seemingly content with his own centre-forward options for the time being too, with all the focus on signing Bradley Barcola before the summer window closes.

Nunez still made sure to wish Araujo luck when joining Liverpool, as the Barca loanee revealed what they had talked about in an interview with the club's official website.

Araujo said: "He’s a good mate of mine. We’ve known each other and played together since we were kids, basically. He’s always spoken highly of Liverpool, for sure.

"When you’re out with Darwin, people are always shouting his name and things like that. He’s told me about how the fans would recognise him and say, ‘Nunez, Nunez!’”
