Liverpool make 'surprise' Jarell Quansah plan amid right-back pursuit
Liverpool are not planning to bring Jarell Quansah back to Anfield in the near future despite plans to strengthen their back line.
The 23-year-old completed a £35million move to Bayer Leverkusen last summer after being deemed surplus to requirements by Arne Slot, who preferred other defensive options.
Since then, his performances in the Bundesliga and for England at international level have sparked speculation that a return to Liverpool could soon be on the cards.
However, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool are not planning to re-sign Quansah any time soon and will assess other targets.
The centre-back, who crucially can also play at right-back, has a buyback clause in his contract believed to be worth around £59million, fueling the suggestions of a return.
However, Liverpool are unwilling to part with such a significant fee for a player who is not a specialist at right-back, and Quansah looks set to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.
Could Liverpool make a move to re-sign Jarell Quansah?
Football Insider reveled on 6 October that Liverpool have continued keeping tabs on Quansah since he left the club last summer and have been impressed by what they've seen.
They are currently considered unlikely to make a move to bring him back to Anfield or to trigger his buy back clause, although that may change at some stage in the future.
With the Reds aiming to improve at right-back in upcoming transfer windows, Quansah is unlikely to be seen as the answer to their prayers, with other options in line.
"Jarell Quansah is a very good player and he's always been very highly regarded," Brown told Football Insider.
"I remember watching him when he first came through, then he went out on loan to Bristol Rovers, and he impressed enough to eventaully get into the Liverpool side.
"Last year, the manager decided that he was surplus to requirements and the club thought they could get a good fee from him, so they decided it was best for him to move on.
"He's impressed since going to Germany and he's now an important part of his England squad as well, and Thomas Tuchel clearly likes him.
"But it would be a surprise if Liverpool decided to bring him back at the moment, because they won't want to admit they got it wrong in letting him go just a year ago.
"They've have to spend almost double what they let him go for, and that's not a situation any club wants to be in.
"Plus, he's being tipped as an option to solve their issues at right-back, but I don't think he's the answer in that respect, for that sort of money they'd want a specialist in that position.
"I don't doubt he would be an improvement on what they've got and it might be something they look at in the future, but for now I don't think it's going to be part of their plans."
How does Quansah feel about returning to Liverpool?
While Liverpool are unlikely to push to bring Quansah back to Anfield any time soon, speculation about his future at Bayer Leverkusen has persisted in recent weeks
As a result of his performances for England, a number of clubs have taken note of his progress, but Liverpool remain heavily tipped as the front-runners in any race.
However, Football Insider revealed on 8 October that Quansah is reluctant to return to Anfield any time and could turn down any offers from Andoni Iraola's side.
Sources say that Quansah has “reservations” about any possible return to Liverpool, given how difficult he found it to secure regular football previously.
Despite the sitaution at Anfield having changed since his departure, he is still believed to have doubts, and would preger to stay at Bayer Leverkusen as things stand.
