Lloris ‘won’t be happy’ at Tottenham amid Gold contract update – pundit

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will “not be happy” with Antonio Conte’s decision to overlook him against Chelsea in midweek, according to Kevin Phillips.

The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was “very surprised” to see Pierluigi Gollini given the gloves on Wednesday night.

Lloris was dropped for the second leg of the League Cup semi final despite starting the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

As quoted by Football.London (12 January), Conte defended his selection and said Gollini “deserved his chance in an important game.”

The decision comes while Spurs and in the midst of contract talks with Lloris.

According to Football.London‘s Alasdair Gold (13 January), a new deal “is expected to be finalised soon.”

When asked by Football Insider’s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Conte’s selection v Chelsea, Phillips said: “Lloris would not be happy about that.

“I cannot believe the decision would have been made without some kind of discussion beforehand though. I’m sure they came to an agreement before the game.

“It is always a tough one when cup games come around. Tottenham haven’t won anything for so long though. You would think they’d go full strength in a semi-final like that.

“Gollini made a big mistake so Conte’s decision not to play Lloris is being questioned.

“I can see why the decision was made but I was very surprised, to be honest, especially if he is getting a new contract.”
