Lord Sugar delivers Twitter verdict on Tottenham after Europa League exit

By Will Butcher

Lord Sugar has revealed his disappointment on Twitter after Tottenham were knocked out of the Europa League by Belgian outfit Gent.

Spurs drew 2-2 at Wembley on the night, with Gent’s 1-0 win in the first leg enough to see them progress to the round of 16 instead of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Sugar, who was Spurs’ chairman between 1991 and 2001, blasted Dele Alli on his Twitter account after he received his marching orders while asking “what is it about Wembley?”.

Spurs took the lead early on with a neat finish from playmaker Christian Eriksen, who slotted the ball underneath goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic.

However, a Harry Kane own goal equalled the second-leg tie and provided Gent with an away goal, before Alli was shown a straight red card for a knee-high lunge on Brecht Dejaegere.

Victor Wanyama gave Spurs hope in the second half, but Jeremy Perbet scored his second goal against Spurs in a week to earn a 2-2 draw, after finding the back of the net during the 1-0 win in Belgium.

Former chairman Sugar questioned Spurs’ form at Wembley, with the stadium playing host to the north London giants’ home games in European competition this season.

Playing four matches against Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco, CSKA Moscow and Gent, Spurs have won just one game and lost another three.

Pochettino’s side must now focus on the Premier League and the FA Cup, with a home league game against Mark Hughes’ Stoke City on Sunday up next.

A 15th league win of the season will see Spurs leapfrog Manchester City into second, with Pep Guardiola’s not playing in the Premier League this weekend.

In other Tottenham news, Stan Collymore has predicted Sunday’s clash at White Hart Lane.
