Luis Diaz: Liverpool star has ‘terrorised everyone from the word go’ – Whelan
Liverpool star Luis Diaz’s “clever runs” and “frightening” pace could hold the key to defeating Chelsea in the League Cup final tomorrow, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old January addition has “added so much” to the Reds side already.
Diaz’s chances of starting tomorrow’s Wembley showpiece final could hinge on the fitness of Diogo Jota – with the Colombian deputising for the forward in the last two games.
As quoted by The Guardian in yesterday’s (25 February) pre-match press conference, assistant boss Pep Ljinders claimed Jota “isn’t ruled out” but faces a “challenge” in order to be passed fit.
Whelan hailed Diaz for taking to his new club “like a duck to water”.
He suggested it is “scary to think” about how good the winger could be by the end of this season.
“From the word go he’s been terrorising everyone on that left-hand side for Liverpool,” Whelan told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“He’s brilliant on the ball, clever with his runs, frightening turn of pace. To be honest with you, he’s just taken to it like a duck to water.
“He’s the right player. It might have been six months before he wanted to bring him in. There’s no doubt that he’s added so much to Liverpool already.
“Look how good he is already after three games. It’s scary to think about how good he might be by the end of the season. He could be pivotal to where that trophy goes tomorrow.”
Diaz joined Liverpool last month for a reported initial fee of £37million.
He netted his first goal for the club in the 3-1 win over Norwich last Saturday (19 February).
