Maguire: Football chiefs won’t give me ‘straight answer’ over mega-money West Brom headache

West Brom could be set for a big blow as the Premier League have not yet given a “straight answer” over this season’s parachute payments.

That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively with Albion in a perilous position in the league.

Parachute payments are dished out to relegated teams in order to help them cope with the transition from the top-flight to the Championship.

But the Premier League is yet to break down how much last season’s three relegated teams received.

That in turn makes it difficult to calculate how much 2020-21’s unlucky trio will net, as Maguire explains.

He revealed that he has written to the Premier League but has been unable to get a satisfactory answer.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “You get a percentage of broadcast revenue. It’s 55 per cent in year one and 45 per cent in year two.

“That’s a per cent of the equally distributed money compared to the side that finishes bottom of the Premier League. So it is very much based on a formula.

“But this year and last, no one is certain. I wrote to the Premier League last week to say: ‘You normally put out a very detailed table of how much each club receives but this year you haven’t.’

“They normally do that within seven days of the end of the season but they haven’t done that for 2019-20. They never gave me a straight answer.”

West Brom appointed Sam Allardyce in December to help fight relegation.

With only a handful of games remaining, he has so far been unable to turn things around.
