Man City 115 charges case could trigger ‘wage cap’ – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested the Man City 115 charges case should see tighter spending controls introduced in the Premier League.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the English top-flight has to “put a cap on the mad spending” and cited the NFL’s system.
Man City and the Premier League will fight behind closed doors this month in the much-anticipated hearing into 115 alleged breaches of financial rules.
The English champions are accused of failing to provide accurate details for player and manager payments or comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The Premier League does not have a salary cap but American sports like NBA and NFL have successfully limited wage spending for decades.
Wage cap should be introduced after Man City case, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This case shows there should be better controls on how money is spent.
“That’s what the case against Man City is about, in many ways.
“We know it’s a difficult thing. The NFL have had great success with wage and salary caps after working it through.
“That’s what has caused the valuation of their franchises to go through the roof.

“Looking at that, I think there has to be some way for the Premier League to put a cap on the mad spending.
“If it can find a way to do that, then I think that’s the answer to ownership issues.”
