Medical insider issues Jack Grealish injury claim amid Man City latest – ‘you fear it’s an ACL’

Most people fear an ACL injury when they hear the phrase ‘ligament damage’ – but Jack Grealish’s latest setback at Man City is not a major concern.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Grealish, 25, was not included in the matchday squad for City’s pulsating 3-3 draw at Newcastle United last Sunday (21 August).

As quoted by The Mirror later that day, Pep Guardiola revealed that the attacker has sustained a “little bit of damage to his ligament”.

The manager went on to explain that Grealish was already feeling better but had not yet felt ready to play at St James’ Park.

Dinnery suggests that the 23-cap England man could return to action in “seven to 14 days.”

“Whenever anyone talks ligaments, the first thing you fear is the ACL,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“You always think worst-case scenario and you think that player X could have an extended period on the sidelines.

“But it is possible to suffer minor ligament strains and knocks and return to play within seven to 14 days. That isn’t uncommon.

“It also depends which ligament we’re talking about as well. We know, for example, that the medial collateral ligament responds really well to conservative treatment.

“With Grealish in particular, this isn’t something that I think we should be overly concerned about. I think it’s what Pep said it is, i.e a minor issue.

“They practically have a fully fit squad, so there is no need to take any risks, especially when you are only playing one game per week.”
