Man City and Chelsea could use £60m windfall to offset huge blow – Stefan Borson
Manchester City and Chelsea can put the £60million Club World Cup prize money towards covering the losses they could potentially make from failing to qualify for the Champions League.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there is a possibility both sides won’t secure their place in the competition for next season.
Man City and Chelsea are both set to compete in the Club World Cup between 15 June and 13 July in the US next summer.
The Daily Mail reported on 9 December the Premier League duo are in line to earn £60million from the 32-team competition.
Man City currently sit sixth in the Premier League table following their poor run of form, while Chelsea are second behind league leaders Liverpool.
Man City and Chelsea could suffer Champions League failure
Borson suggested Fifa could be subsidising the Club World Cup prize money after questioning where the cash is coming from.
“I wonder whether it is £60million,” Borson told Football Insider.
“That sounds like a lot for every club. That would be the best part of £2billion. I think it’s unlikely it’s £2billion.
“Unless Fifa are effectively subsidising it, I don’t think the stadia receipts, commercial receipts or broadcast receipts are going to be anywhere near £2billion in total.
“It may be that £60million is the maximum you can win, rather than a kind of base level or an equal distribution for every club. I would take it with a pinch of salt.
“But clearly, when you have got £60million prize money at stake, it’s going to be interesting to some clubs.
“There is no guarantee either of Chelsea or City are going to get in the Champions League next season.
“Chelsea are not in the Champions League this season. City have been in the Champions League for the last 10 to 12 years, but it’s possible they won’t get there this season.
“That £60million will be important to offset any loss of Champions League revenue that might come.

“It is important, but I would still take it with a pinch of salt. I just wonder where that prize money can come from.
“At the moment, it looks like the total proceeds of that tournament will be less than £2billion.”
