Man City compensation row could kick off Premier League ‘civil war’ – top source

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted clubs claiming compensation from Man City would mean “civil war” in the Premier League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed he hopes the situation can be resolved without sides launching individual claims against the English champions.

According to The Times (13 November) Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Man United have “lodged legal notices reserving the right to seek a payout if City are found guilty of serious breaches”.

Pep Guardiola’s side are accused of 115 breaches of Premier League financial rules and have been embroiled in an independent hearing since September.

Football Insider revealed on 8 November that Man City could be forced to pay more than £70million in compensation to other clubs if they are found guilty.

The Etihad Stadium club have always maintained innocence and claim they have irrefutable evidence to prove it.

Man City compensation row would be a ‘mess’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is just one part of this 115 charges situation.

“The words civil war come to mind.

“We’re delving into a long-term legal dispute on so many different fronts. Every boardroom, every weekend would be hostile.

“It would be a mess.

“I’m hoping this can be resolved without having to get into these battles. But clubs are reserving positions.

“We hope it won’t come to that, and as far as I can see it is just jousting so far.”
