Injury expert: Up to 18 Man City players ‘at risk’ after Premier League announcement
Man City will be worried that changes to the footballer calendar in 2022-23 could put their international players at greater risk of injury.
So says injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.
The Premier League announced its revised calendar for next season on 11 November in order to make room for the 2022 winter World Cup in Qatar.
The campaign will begin on 6 August and end on 28 May, with a 42-day break between 14 November and Boxing Day.
The final of world football’s most opulent competition will take place just eight days before the resumption of the domestic season.
City currently have 18 internationals on the books, more than any other team in the Premier League.
Dinnery claims that the club will be concerned about the dangers the chaotic 2022-23 calendar could pose to their Qatar-bound stars.
He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “Those players who are involved in the latter stages of the tournament, that is a concern.
“The evidence collected from previous years suggests that those players who are involved deeper in the tournament are more at risk.
“But players who are starting and playing games regularly, they will be able to maintain their base levels of fitness.
“But then players can become more deconditioned if they are going to these tournaments and not really playing.

“Once they are thrown back into the Premier League, fatigue can be a massive red flag when it comes to injury incidents.
“So for those clubs that have a lot of international players, this will be a worry.”
