Man City could now hand Everton a huge takeover boost – Stefan Borson

Man City will make Everton more attractive to potential takeover bidders if they win their case against the Premier League.

That is the view of former City financial advisor Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Everton will support City in their upcoming case.

City are set to take on the Premier League in a two-week hearing starting on Monday (10 June) as they challenge their associated party transaction rules.

The rules make it tougher for clubs to strike deals with parties linked to a club’s ownership with all agreements having to be deemed fair market value.

Everton are in search of new owners after the deal between Farhad Moshiri and 777 Partners collapsed last month.

Borson believes scrapping the APT rules would suit Everton’s takeover deal as it would make the club more attractive to interested parties.

What is most important for Everton, of course, is that they’re up for sale,” Borson told Football Insider’s James Murray.

So for the clubs who are trying to sell themselves, you want as little regulation as possible for a club that’s up for sale.

They want to be able to make an impact if they were purchased and clearly, if you can invest in a club that you buy then it makes it a more interesting proposition to bidders.

If you’re bound by the sorts of limits that Everton are likely to be bound by over the next five to 10 years, there’s actually very little that a new owner can do to move the dial on their league performance.

They’d have to be incredibly smart to work with the budget that they’re going to have to be able to compete at the top of the table.

Clearly that would be a disincentive for a new buyer.

So I think Everton would be quite pleased if City are able to put some of the extended APT rules in the bin.
