Man City could now pay ‘unlimited damages’ to PL rivals – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed rules are in place allowing clubs to seek “unlimited damages” from Man City if they are found guilty in their 115 charges case.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted such an outcome would be “very sad” but admitted “a lot of clubs” will be exploring their options.

The Times reported (13 August) that any Premier League clubs considering “suing” the title winners may have to submit a claim before learning the outcome of the case due to time limits.

The hearing date is now believed to have been brought forward to mid-to-late September and will take place over several months.

City were hit with 115 charges last year for alleged rule breaches, including failure to comply with the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for seven seasons.

The club has always maintained they are innocent of any wrongdoing.

Man City face ‘unlimited’ payouts to rivals if found guilty in 115 charges case, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s no way for the clubs to sue each other through court.

“But an independent panel convened by the Premier League could hear cases from clubs seeking compensation.

“It won’t be a lawsuit and all the headlines that come with it.

“According to the Everton findings from last year, this panel would have the power to offer unlimited damages.

“So different clubs could pursue City for all kinds of damages.

“I would assume that a lot of clubs would be looking at that option – depending on the result of the tribunal which is coming up.

“It’s an issue which is very sad, I hate to see clubs getting involved off the pitch.

“But here we are and we’re now into this rule-laden area causing disputes between clubs who are seeking redress.”
