Man City could pull off ‘masterstroke’ after Joao Cancelo deal agreed – Borson
Manchester City could save £10million a year if they manage to sell Joao Cancelo before the 30 August transfer deadline.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it would be a “masterstroke” from the Premier League champions’ player sales team if they can offload the 30-year-old.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported on 22 August Saudi club Al Hilal have agreed a £29.6million deal to sign Cancelo.
The Portugal international has spent the past year-and-a-half away from the Etihad after he joined Bayern Munich on loan in January 2023 and spent last season with Barcelona.
Man City could save £10million annually after agreeing Joao Cancelo deal
Borson revealed Man City will be “delighted” if they can sell Cancelo as he doesn’t feature in Pep Guardiola’s plans moving forward.
He told Football Insider: “It would be an absolute masterstroke from Man City’s player sales team because you are talking about a player who has probably got a £10million-a-year minimum contract.
“I think he’s still got three or four years left on that contract and he’s out of the manager’s plans completely.
“When you have got a player like that, you are really talking about a liability and not an asset because you have got to pay them come what May and you don’t want to use them.
“There are very limited clubs now that Cancelo could go to.

“He’s already played for a number of the biggest clubs in Europe and there has been very little interest across Europe.
“Saudi was always looking like it was City’s biggest hope and if that deal does transpire, then they will be delighted about that because it will save them a huge amount of money.”
