Man City could trigger release clause after new reveal – Stefan Borson
Manchester City could target players around Europe with release clauses as they look to make new signings in the January transfer window.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that is the most pragmatic approach for the Premier League champions to take this month.
Man City’s title hopes have all but gone this season following a run of just one win in 13 games in all competitions before their 2-0 victory over Leicester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side want to strengthen in defence, in central midfield, and up front in the January and summer windows this year.
Football Insider revealed on 27 December Man City could look to trigger Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi’s £50million release clause, but a more realistic target following more recent developments is Barcelona star Dani Olmo.
Man City could struggle to make several January signings
Borson admitted it could be difficult for them to make more than one new signing in this window.
He told Football Insider: “I can’t see many high-quality Premier League players moving in January.
“You then look at fringe players and City probably don’t want them.
“There are release clauses around Europe. I think that’s the most pragmatic approach and that’s probably City’s primary focus.
“But even then, the player has to want to leave. If you look at it from a family perspective, does a player want to uproot his family in January and go to Manchester?
“I think it’s a very difficult thing to do. It has happened before.

“There have been some signings made in January, but they are hard to do. We will just have to see.
“I think it’s going to be very challenging for City to do more than one deal.”
