Finance guru: Man City fighting off ‘secret’ data leak as new details emerge

Man City are protecting themselves against a “secret” data leak through their deal with cybersecurity experts Acronis.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 2021-22 Premier League champions’ decision to renew with the Swiss firm.

Sport Business reported on Monday (25 July) that a deal has been signed for the partnership to enter its fifth season.

The new arrangement sees American IT company Micro integrated into the deal as part of its collaboration with Acronis.

Acronis provide data security services for a number of the world’s biggest sports teams and City have one of the largest data departments in football.

Plumley insists that the merits of the renewed deal are plain to see.

“It seems like they both get what they want from the deal,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams,

“We know how important this industry is these days. Clubs own and use a lot of data. That encapsulates both player and fan data.

“It’s a big issue, so City are also getting that security from this deal in terms of their secret digital assets.

“It’s no surprise to see this deal extended. If it’s into its fifth season, it clearly shows they have got a good working relationship.”

Man City

Man City were the biggest revenue generator in football in 2020-21 with £570m.

Of that figure, £271.7m came in the form of commercial income.
