Kieran Maguire: Man City in ‘very strong position’ after best-in-the-world £544m reveal
Man City do not rely heavily on matchday income and had a stunning season in 2020-21 – that is why they coped so well with the pandemic.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the results of a recent study from KPMG.
The football business analysts released figures on Monday (31 January) that showed City had held up better than any other team in Covid-hit 2020-21.

They earned £544million in total, with £283.3m coming from broadcast and £259.6m coming from commercial streams.
They earned less than £1m from matchday income as almost all of the campaign was played behind closed doors.
Maguire explained how the Cityzens have managed to perform so well while other teams were hit badly.
“City have probably been one of the best-placed to deal with the pandemic,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.
“If we look at matchday income in a non-Covid year, they generated 10 per cent of revenue. Arsenal, for comparison, generated 24 per cent.
“So on a proportionate basis, they just aren’t hit as hard as other clubs.
“There is also the fact that winning trophies has put them in a strong position to sign new commercial deals. People want their products next to trophies.
“So the combination of less reliance on matchday and success on the pitch has put them in a very strong position.”

City are so far the only Premier League team to post a profit for the 2020-21 financial year.
They announced an excess of £2.4m last month.
