Man City issued ‘big’ transfer verdict by pundit after ‘very surprising’ Ilkay Gundogan report

Paul Robinson would be “very surprised” if Man City allowed Ilkay Gundogan to leave this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed the 31-year-old would leave “a big hole” in Pep Guardiola’s side.

Gundogan starred for Man City on Sunday, scoring two from the bench to clinch the Premier League title for his side.

However, according to the Daily Mail‘s Mike Keegan (17 May), the centre-midfielder is set to leave the club this summer.

Gundogan has just over 12 months remaining on his contract at the Etihad.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Gundogan’s future, Robinsons said: “I’d be very surprised if they let him go.

“He has more than proved his worth again this season and I’m not just talking about the last game. People forget the amount of goals he scored last season. It was amazing. He has been integral for them over the past two years.

“Goalscoring midfielders are not easy to come by. They are few and far between. He is one of those. Those late runs he makes into the box are brilliant.

“He puts in the hard yards as well. He is tenacious.

“You have to ask yourself, ‘What would it take to replace a player of Gundogan’s quality?’ I think it would be very hard to. I think he’d leave a big hole.

“There is a lot of factors but I would not be in a hurry to let him go.”
