Man City may have found Marc Cucurella alternative after journalist’s update – pundit
Alan Hutton has suggested Sergio Gomez could be a good alternative to Marc Cucurella for Man City.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and Villa defender said although City have options in the left-back position, it is an area Pep Guardiola will want to strengthen.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (10 August), the Sky Blues have reached a verbal agreement with Anderlecht for Gomez.
The fee for the 21-year-old is said to be around £13million.
As reported in The Guardian (9 August), Guardiola had initially planned on sending the defender on loan.
But the club are now said to be keen to keep the Spaniard at the Etihad after missing out on a deal for Marc Cucurella, who joined Chelsea last week (5 August).
Gomez currently has three years remaining on his Anderlecht contract.
When asked if Gomez could fit into the Man City team, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think if you’re a clever player of course you can fit in to that team.
“They’ve got [Joao] Cancelo who can play there just now. It’s not a huge problem, [Nathan] Ake can play there. I don’t think it’s such a bad thing.
“Cucurella was probably the long-term goal for Pep moving forward to play there regularly, obviously it’s not quite worked out.

“I think anybody who’s got a football brain, who can understand Pep’s ideas will be a good signing. I don’t see why he wouldn’t [be a good signing].
“You get given time at City to bed in with the international players that are already there who rotate. It is obviously a position they’re looking to strengthen though.“
