Man City news: Expert demands Uefa punishment after ‘incredible’ claim – ‘they should be fined’

Noel Whelan has hailed Man City for keeping “control” despite “disgraceful” provocation from Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Pep Guardiola’s side “handled themselves incredibly” during the Champions League clash.

Man City advanced to the semi-finals of the competition after securing a 1-0 aggregate win with a 0-0 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday (12 April) – a game which was marred by a number of clashes between players on and off the pitch.

Atleti’s Felipe was dismissed for his part in sparking a mass brawl in the second half – and police were forced to intervene as altercations broke out in the tunnel post-match.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News (13 April), Guardiola refused to comment on the scenes, but said “we take dinner and then we prepare for the FA Cup semi-final”.

Whelan claimed Atletico Madrid “should be fined” for their part in the ugly scenes.

“We know what Diego Simeone’s sides are all about,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“We know they’re going to get in the face of the referee, that didn’t surprise me.

“You’ve just got to give great credit to the professionalism of Man City. They handled themselves incredibly.

“It was one of those moments where they could have lost control, but they didn’t. They went in with a smile and knocked Atleti out. They knew there was going to be hostility.

“And after the game, you see the footage from the tunnel – disgraceful scenes. They should be fined. That’s not fair play, it’s just sore losers.”
