Man City closing in on Fernandinho replacement after Sky reveal – ‘watch this space’
Man City will have identified “plenty of targets” to replace Fernandinho ahead of his exit this summer, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted it will be “very difficult” to replace the 36-year-old – who remains “one of the best midfielders in world football” despite his advancing years.
Fernandinho revealed via Sky Sports (12 April) that it is unlikely he will continue into a tenth season with City – with his contract expiring this summer.
He told reporters of his plans to return to Brazil, his country of birth.
The City captain has played 374 times across nine years at the club, winning four Premier League titles and an FA Cup – among other honours.
Whelan suggested the midfielder’s exit marks “the end of an era” at the Etihad Stadium.
“It’s very difficult to replace a player like Fernandinho,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“I’ve been a massive admirer of his throughout the years he’s been at Man City. He’s one of the best defensive midfield players, controls a game – and it’s very difficult to find players like that.
“He’s at an age now where he’s served his time, and he needs regular football – and he wants to get that in Brazil.
“But where do you go to replace that? It’s the end of an era. On his day he is one of the best midfielders in world football – and I still believe that to be the case.
“Watch this space, is all you can say – I’m sure City will have plenty of targets in mind.

Man City are understood to have a strong interest in West Ham midfielder Declan Rice ahead of the summer window – with Chelsea, Man United, and Liverpool also in the hunt.
The Citizens sit top of the Premier League with seven games remaining.
