Man City news: ‘Frightening’ claim issued after club chief’s Julian Alvarez reveal – pundit
Noel Whelan has admitted Man City having Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez in attack next season is a “frightening prospect”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds forward claimed the duo could form a formidable partnership when they link up at the Etihad Stadium this summer.
As quoted by the Sun (25 May), City chief Ferran Soriano confirmed the club have had numerous loan offers for Alvarez, 22, but that he will be staying at the Etihad for the 2022/23 season.
The Argentina international signed for Man City in January but remained at River Plate on loan until the end of the current campaign.
Whelan admitted City have gone from having no natural centre-forward to having two ahead of the new campaign.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think everyone thought the title was finished when they signed Haaland.
“Now that you’ve got another striker that’s banging goals in, a natural, and you think you’ve got those two working together on the training ground, what a frightening prospect.
“Man City have always been a team that, if they need to wait, they will wait. They think they’ve got enough there to go and still win the Premier League, which they have done without a natural goal scorer or natural striker.
“Having two at the club makes it doubly difficult for everybody else. I think it makes sense. He’s been out on loan, when he signed he went back to his old club. Now it’s the beginning of pre-season with his new team.
“He’ll be getting used to his new surroundings. Now you’ve got Haaland as well, two natural goalscorers. It’s going to make it very, very interesting, isn’t it?”

Alvarez has scored 14 goals in 17 appearances for River Plate this season.
Meanwhile, Haaland netted 29 times in 30 games for Borussia Dortmund.
