Man City news: Pundit issues ‘100 per cent’ Phil Foden claim after journalist’s reveal
Paul Robinson has urged Gareth Southgate to stick with Man City winger Phil Foden for the last 16 of the World Cup.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England number one said the 22-year-old is “capable of playing anywhere” and should start ahead of Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling.
Foden was handed his first start of the World Cup on Tuesday as the Three Lions ran out 3-0 winners over Wales.
The Man City attacker played out wide in the fixture which sealed England’s place in the last 16.
There has been clamour for Foden to play in midfield for Gareth Southgate’s side.
However, according to The Athletic (30 November), Mount remains the preferred choice in the advanced midfield position.
When asked by Football Insider if Foden should retain his place against Senegal, Robinson said: “100 per cent.
“He has to keep him in the team. He is capable of playing anywhere.
“I cannot understand why a player that Pep Guardiola has described as ‘the best young player he has worked with’ struggles to get into the England team. He shows incredible talent every week at Man City.

“Harry Kane and Foden are the best two players England have got. It is frustrating. I couldn’t believe it when he didn’t come on against the USA.
“I’m glad he got a game against Wales. I just hope he keeps his place. I’d play Foden over Mount and Sterling.”
