Man City news: Pundit slams stars as Oleksandr Zinchenko controversy analysed – ‘you cannot do that’

Kevin Campbell has slammed Real Madrid’s defending for Man City midfielder Bernardo Silva’s goal on Tuesday night.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said Carlo Ancelotti’s side should have played to the whistle at the Etihad.

Pep Guadriola’s side beat Real Madrid 4-3 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

As shown on BT Sport (26 April), Bernardo Silva scored Man City’s fourth goal with a sumptuous left-footed strike after 74 minutes.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was fouled by Toni Kroos moments before the strike but referee Istvan Kovacs played the advantage and City reaped the rewards.

Some Real Madrid players, including goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, froze after Kroos’ foul expecting the whistle to be blow.

When asked if Los Blancos had any grounds to be aggrieved, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: “Real Madrid can have no complaints.

“What are you told as a youngster? Play to the whistle.

“If the whistle was blown, fair enough but it wasn’t so they should have played on. This is the Champions League semi-final we are talking about. You cannot switch off like that. You should not switch off.

“Man City played on and caught them. Listen, that is completely fair. If the referee wants to play the advantage he can. City got the advantage and capitalised on it.”

Man City travel to the Bernabeu for the return leg next Wednesday.

Joao Cancelo will be available for the trip after serving his suspension.
