Man City news: ‘Top’ player injury fear after confirmed training ground reveal – expert

Alex McLeish has raised fears some of Pep Guardiola’s top stars are being “overloaded” at Manchester City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager insisted losing “two or three” big names could see City “scrambling” for results.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News on Tuesday (19 April), Pep Guardiola revealed City’s medical staff administered “71 treatments” to players between the first leg against Atletico Madrid and the FA Cup semi-final with Liverpool.

He stated that number is “more than usual” and put it down to City’s intense fixture schedule.

McLeish insisted the Spanish boss is right to be concerned despite having a “big squad” at the Etihad Stadium.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “We said two years ago when the pandemic started. Not only were players having to play domestic games but then there were internationals coming after.

“They were being overloaded. Yes, Pep does have a big squad, more than other teams.

“But you only have to lose two or three of the top guys and you’re already scrambling for results. That’s how fickle it can be when you’re trying to win a championship.

“They’re still up there, it went from a 12-point lead to one point. Credit to Liverpool for coming back the way they did.”

City have six games left to play in the Premier League, with Liverpool one point behind.

Both sides are also in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

City face Watford at home before playing host to Real Madrid next week.

They then travel to Leeds United before visiting Spain for the second leg of their European tie.
