Man City points deduction? Keith Wyness lifts lid on potential new threat

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Man City will not be in danger of breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) even if they drop out of the Champions League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted City have good assets to trade if they are desperate for revenue at any point.

Man City sit sixth in the Premier League at the halfway point of the 2024-25 campaign after winning just two of their last 10 top-flight games.

Wyness has previously told Football Insider (1 January) that failing to qualify for the Champions League would see revenues at City drop between “£40-60million”.

The Citizens have qualified for Europe’s premier club competition in each of the last 14 seasons dating back to the 2009-10 campaign.

They have been accused of breaching PSR on seven occasions historically as part of their legal fight with the Premier League, which remains unresolved.

Clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over three seasons under the current rules before incurring punishments – which include fines and points deductions.

Man City under no threat of new PSR breaches, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think there’s still leeway at City, even if they don’t qualify for the Champions League.

“They’ve proven they can sell players for good prices and they’ve got good assets to trade if that becomes necessary.

“I don’t think we’ll see City in any new PSR breach any time soon. I think they’ll be okay on that side, it’s more about rebuilding the squad back up to what we’re used to.

“It’s more a football issue, PSR won’t come into it.

“Nevertheless, missing out on the Champions League and everything that comes with it would be a big blow to take.”
