Man City ready to take accept ‘huge’ Kalvin Phillips loss as decision made – sources

Man City are ready to take a big-money loss on midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (2 April) West Ham have already decided they will terminate Phillips’ loan deal at the London Stadium when it ends – and will not look to sign the 28-year-old him full-time.

The midfielder has endured a torrid time at the London Stadium since arriving in January.

Phillips’ valuation has now plummeted and a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Man City are aware they will need to take a “huge loss” to get him off the books this summer.

They were expecting to boost his value with the loan at West Ham – but are now preparing to take a lower fee in the off-season.

Man City prepared to take ‘huge loss’ after Phillips plan goes awry

He is set to miss out on the England squad for this summer’s European Championships in Germany – another blow to City’s plans of putting Phillips in the shop window.

The ex-Leeds United star has played nine times for West Ham since arriving, starting in just three of those outings.

Phillips kickstarted Newcastle’s comeback in their 4-3 win over West Ham on Saturday (30 March) by conceding a penalty – before reacting angrily by swearing at a fan who had called him “useless” post-match.

He was an unused substitute for the 1-1 draw against Tottenham on Tuesday (2 April).

The midfielder is set to return to Man City this summer, where he has made just six starts in 31 total appearances since joining for a reported £45million in 2022.
