Kieran Maguire salutes ‘pioneers’ Man City as new ‘money-spinning project’ revealed

Man City will be seen as “pioneers” in the metaverse industry if their new commercial project is successful.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about City’s first foray into the online virtual reality space.

City announced last Thursday (14 July) that they have launched a tie-in with online gaming platform Roblox.

The link-up will see City enter the metaverse for the first time.

The 2021-22 Premier League champions teamed up with tech giants Sony in November last year to aid their metaverse project.

Maguire claims that the Roblox deal comes with virtually no risk attached.

“It’s a close to zero risk as a money-spinning project for Man City,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“There is only an upside, no downside. It is a punt but if it does fail to materialise then it won’t have come at a cost to the club. If it is successful, they will be seen to be the pioneers in this industry.

“City are keen to expand their potential fanbase. This can help them reach new markets.

There is no doubt that they are delivering on the pitch but other clubs seem to get a disproportionate amount of attention compared to the number of trophies they win.”

City generated £570m in revenue for 2020-21, the last financial year on record.

They currently have 30 global partners and 15 regional partners.
