Sources: Man City set sights on beating Liverpool to attacker signing before window opens

Man City have set their sights on beating Liverpool to the signing of West Brom striker Jovan Malcolm, Football Insider can reveal.

The Premier League big guns are beating a path to the door of the Championship leaders after being alerted by the performances of the 16-year-old.

A Man City source has told Football Insider that the club are interested in signing Malcolm before he turns 17 next month.

The Premier League champions face strong competition from Liverpool for his signature as well as Man United and Arsenal.

They have all made regular scouting checks on Malcolm as the Premier League’s big guns look to land the best young talents in the country.

This comes after Football Insider revealed that Liverpool have turned their attention to Malcolm after his stunning performance against them last weekend.

The teenager scored four times as West Brom Under-18s beat their Liverpool counterparts 6-3.

West Brom have an impressive track record in developing young players and will be wary of the interest from big spending City, who poached highly-rated attacker Morgan Rogers from the Hawthorns earlier this year.

The Baggies are keen to keep hold of Malcolm and hope to tie him down to a professional contract to ward off interest from his Premier League suitors.

However, they cannot do so until his 17th birthday next month, which opens the door to rival clubs to secure him for a cut-price compensation fee.

The pursuit of Liverpool and Man City comes at a time when the two clubs have emerged as the dominant forces in English football.

The two clubs are set to be the main challengers for the league title once again this season, with Liverpool stretching their lead to eight points following last Sunday’s fiercely-contested 3-1 win at Anfield.

In other West Brom news, it can be REVEALED that a London club is plotting a January swap deal with the Baggies.
