Man City slammed and ‘lifetime bans’ demanded as controversial footage analysed – expert

Man City could have done more to stop Robin Olsen from being attacked by fans as they beat Aston Villa 3-2 on Sunday (22 May) to secure the Premier League title.

That is the view of Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “ridiculous” scenes in the immediate aftermath of the game.

The 32-year-old was assaulted while trying to leave the pitch at the end of the match.

He insisted via Instagram on Monday (23 May) that he would not let “idiots” ruin his Aston Villa debut.

BBC Sport reported after the game City had launched an investigation and the individual responsible would be handed a lifetime stadium ban.

“The Olsen incident, it’s just cowards that want to spoil it,” Agbonlahor said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I thought Olsen was brilliant in the game. Those cowards need banning for life.

“If people start to find out that people are getting lifetime bans that will help stop these idiots.

“It was obvious that Man City fans were going to run on the pitch. During the game, you could tell that there weren’t enough stewards.

“Clubs are allowing it to happen. If it wasn’t for the police they would have got down the tunnel. It’s ridiculous and more has to be done to keep the players safe.”

Olsen moved to Villa Park on loan from Roma in the January transfer window.

He spent the first half of the season on loan with Championship side Sheffield United and spent the 2020-21 campaign with Everton.
