
Revealed: Man City smash agent spend record as £52m outlay confirmed
The £51.6million Man City paid to agents in 2022-23 is the highest since Premier League records began, Football Insider analysis shows.
The FA recently released its annual review of payments to intermediaries, which accounts for the period between February 2022 and January 2023.
Premier League clubs shelled out a record £318.2m in agent fees, with City spending the most at £51.6m.
That is the highest total for an individual club since the FA began publishing its records on agent fees in line with FIFA regulations in 2015-16.
City have spent £225.3m since then, which again is the most of any Premier League side.
It is the second successive year that they have topped the table in terms of intermediary payments, and the third since 2015-16.
It is believed that the bulk of their £51.6m outlay in 2022-23 went to agents involved in the acquisition of 22-year-old superstar Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian signed from Borussia Dortmund for £51m, but it was widely reported that the agents involved in brokering the deal trousered around £35m.
Chelsea, who have spent close to £600m on new signings since the beginning of the Todd Boehly era, were 2021-22’s second-biggest spenders in terms of agent fees with £43.2m.
FIFA approved a new set of regulations last December in an effort to curb agent power within the sport.

A new licensing system has been introduced, as has a cap on the amount agents can earn from individual transactions.
Middlemen can now bank a maximum of 10 per cent of a transfer fee if representing a selling club, while they are also limited to a three per cent commission of a player’s wages.
