Man City to benefit from ‘unlimited spending’ after new Premier League twist – Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Man City and Newcastle are set to benefit from “unlimited spending” if a Premier League luxury tax is introduced.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed other top-flight clubs could vote to introduce the system in the hopes of becoming state-owned clubs in the future.
As reported by the Daily Mail (4 April), the Premier League are considering abolishing the current Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and points deductions in favour of a luxury tax.
Under the proposal, top-flight clubs can continue spending beyond limitations at the cost of a tax that would be spread between other clubs in the division.
Man City (Abu Dhabi United Group) and Newcastle (Saudi Private Investment Fund) are two of the richest clubs in world football following big-money takeovers.
Premier League clubs could vote for luxury tax in hopes of becoming next Man City, says Wyness
Wyness has claimed clubs could vote a luxury tax through in the hope of attracting big-money investment which would allow “unlimited spending”.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The reason I think it may be voted through is that I don’t think clubs would want to hamper any potential new owner.
“Clubs will take a view of either sticking with their present owner, who doesn’t have the resources to take advantage of the luxury tax – or does it make the club more attractive that you can sell to a state owner and allow them unlimited spending?
“That’s where a lot of clubs have sat on the fence before. No one can really be aligned on this issue.

“Everton, with Moshiri and Usmanov, did have unlimited resources for a time. It all changes depending on where your owners are.
“I think that will decide where clubs vote in this case.”
