Expert: Man City to ‘excel’ as unprecedented Dan Lewindon deal agreed

Man City will continue to “excel at the highest level” thanks to their league-first appointment of health specialist Dan Lewindon.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

As relayed by Training Ground Guru last Friday (19 August), Lewindon has joined City Football Group as their first-ever head of health and performance.

Lewindon will focus on players’ lives outside of mandated hours at the club in a first-of-its-kind appointment in the Premier League.

The former Lawn Tennis Association medical guru will place particular emphasis on sleep, nutrition and mental wellbeing.

Dinnery explained why he represents a smart appointment for City.

“Players spend so little time actually at the club with the coaches,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“There is an understanding that you have to consider the wider picture. You need to look at the three pillars of performance – your diet, exercise and sleep.

“These are integral to delivering optimally and in terms of recovery strategies and understanding that, if you don’t align these things away from the club, you are never going to get the desired result on the pitch.

“If we take sleep, for example, if you aren’t getting enough sleep, you aren’t recovering and getting the right level of energy output.

“Decision making is impacted on the pitch, but also in terms of nutrition and your dietary habits. All of these things need to be attuned if you hope to go out there on the pitch and deliver what your manager wants.

“It’s 365-days-a-year, 24-hours-a-day. If you want to excel at the highest level consistently, every single aspect of your life needs to be micromanaged.

“Players can be elite in a lot of aspects in life but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best at everything. Sometimes they need guidance to get them through these bumps in the road that inevitably will happen.”
