Expert: Man City to reach ‘next level’ as Ryan DeFreitas deal agreed
Man City can reach the “next level” if their analysis department continues to gather insights from training as opposed to just matchdays.
That is the view of training ground expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.
As relayed by Training Ground Guru on Monday (5 September), City have appointed Ryan DeFreitas as a performance analyst with a specific focus on training.

DeFreitas arrives at City after almost a decade with Leicester City where he began as an intern before progressing to become lead academy performance analyst.
Dinnery saluted City for their forward-thinking approach towards analysis.
“It’s an emerging discipline,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“We see clubs increasingly using technology and data to improve the decision-making process.
“Inherently, the majority of what we have heard about this has been with regards to first-team performance and matchdays. This is almost like the next rung of the ladder, understanding training and taking that forward.
“If you can answer these questions, you can deliver insights and actions for players and coaches. Ultimately, you’re always looking to optimise and reach the next level.

“The majority of time spent by payers is on the training pitches. A match is just one 90 minutes.
“Yes, you can glean a lot of information from that but how much can you take from players who are training day in, day out, for five or six days per week?”
