Man City v Premier League: Keith Wyness reveals when case could be over

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed an updated set of Associated Party Transactions (APT) rules could be presented before the end of 2024 after the legal fight with Man City.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the English champions have signalled they want “more fighting” – but is hoping cooler heads will prevail in the coming months.

Man City took legal action in June against the Premier League regarding the APT rules currently in place.

Both sides claimed a victory in the case after the arbitration panel’s decision was published on 7 October, where two aspects of the rules were deemed to be unlawful.

After the 20 top-flight clubs held a meeting on Tuesday (22 October) to discuss the next steps, the Premier League will now update its proposals around rules governing commercial deals.

Man City legal fight could be over before the end of 2024, says Wyness

Wyness admitted the outcome will not be quick, but should be resolved before the new year.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “These delays have become almost part of the problem.

“I don’t think this will be acted on anywhere near quick. The Premier League has already gone back and asked for the independent commission to clarify some points.

“Man City have been very vociferous. Simon Cliff, their head of legal, has said clubs should be wary of any kneejerk reaction or any quick fixes.

“I think cooler heads should prevail and we should get a reasonable adjustment to these rules in the short-term – maybe in the next two months.

“So before the end of the year we should see something come to fruition. That would make sense and it should be well thought through and well-tested.”
