Man City will bank Barcelona windfall after ‘unusual’ development – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed Man City will finally be paid in full by Barcelona for Ferran Torres “in the next two to three seasons”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it is “unusual” for a transfer to drag out this long and claimed “the mess” at Barca is the reason for the odd structure.

Barcelona’s accounts for the 2023-24 campaign have revealed that they still owe Man City £22million as part of the deal for Torres in 2022.

He joined the Catalan giants for £46.3million, including £8.4million in potential add-ons.

The La Liga leaders have been plagued with financial issues in recent years and have undertaken a rebuild at their Camp Nou home.

Man City to receive remainder of Torres fee in the next three years, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Man City may have been unable to receive advance payment of Torres’ fee from a bank due to Barca’s poor credit risk.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “To say Barcelona’s finances have been weird in the last few years would be an understatement.

“It’s not normal for such a big amount to be carried over for so long.

“Man City have given Barcelona the leeway, but I hear it’s going to be fixed in the next two to three seasons.

“It’s going to be two or three big payments – and they must have given City proof they can make those payments.

“City could factor it and get money from a bank against that future payment, but Barcelona may be considered a pretty bad credit risk.

“From what I hear, it could be fixed within the next three seasons – but it’s unusual for a big fee to drag on this long.

“It’s part of the mess within Barcelona.”
