Dr Dan: Man City chiefs dishing out ‘stern tellings off’ after behind-the-scenes blunder

Man City will be livid after one of their main sponsors flouted Premier League broadcasting rules on social media.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Marathonbet’s transgression on 11 December.

The online betting firm posted a clip via Twitter of Raheem Sterling’s decisive penalty during City’s 1-0 win over Wolves.

The incident contravened copyright law and the Daily Mail reported last Friday (17 December) that City have chastised Marathonbet for the breach.

Marathonbet have been City’s official betting partner and training kit sponsor since December 2019.

Plumley insists that the incident earlier this month is the type of lesson that the UK-based company will only need to be taught once.

“The complexity in these sponsorships deals is a minefield,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“It appears that someone has just made an error, in this case. It probably won’t happen again.

“City have got to come out and condemn it because it breaks the rules, and they have done so and been pretty stern with Marathon Bet.

“Marathonbet are the most at risk because they arguably need City more than City need them. That is the kind of dynamic we’re talking about.

“There will have been a couple of tellings off behind the scenes. It’s just a little error of judgement and City have had to come out and be firm.”

City trousered an astonishing £246.3million in commercial income in the last financial year.
