Man United already have perfect Frenkie de Jong ally in the building as images emerge – pundit
Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Donny van de Beek to refind his best form at Man United under Erik ten Hag.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer suggested Van De Beek could be the perfect partner for Frenkie de Jong in United’s midfield.
Van De Beek was pictured back in pre-season training at Man United’s Carrington training base earlier this week (27 June).
Football Insider revealed on Monday (27 June) that the club are in advanced talks to sign De Jong from Barcelona for £64.4million and a full agreement is imminent.
Ten Hag coached the pair at Ajax and Agbonlahor has claimed they could form the basis of United’s midfield for 2022-23.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Van De Beek was not signed to sit on the bench, he was signed to start.
“I really would like him to get a good run of games. He’s now got a manager that he knows, a manager that he really likes working under.
“He can have a really good pre-season and will have that connection with De Jong.
“I’m hoping that he can rediscover that form he had that led to his move to Man United.
“If he does, then that solves a problem in that Man United midfield. They still need defensive midfielders who can win the ball back, Fred and McTominay are not the quality that is needed in a Man United midfield.”
Van De Beek spent the second half of the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Everton.
He has only started four Premier League games for Man United since his move from Ajax in the summer of 2020.
