Man United backed to sign striker ‘like Erling Haaland’ as transfer plans leaked – expert

Alex McLeish has tipped Manchester United to sign a top striker “like Erling Haaland” as part of their rebuild this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss insisted the Red Devils must prioritise their forward line in the transfer window.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News on Tuesday (19 March), Ralf Rangnick revealed he expects the club to make as many as 10 new signings this summer.

He insisted the north west giants need to strengthen every part of the squad apart from goalkeeper.

McLeish suggested a “top, top striker” would be their number one target.

Asked where United need to prioritise this summer, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I would have said they have to concentrate on a top, top striker.

“If that’s Haaland, why not? It’s got to be somebody like that. There are then other positions to fill.

“Back in the day, Sir Alex Ferguson organised his back four, he organised the midfielders who did the long yards. He really got the cultured players playing to a good level.

“That’s what he did. But at Man United, you’re only as good as your strikers. Now, of course, you need a defence.

“But you see the strikers at Liverpool, those three, four guys are off the charts. Those are real, world-class players.”

Rangnick explained he expects so many new additions due to the players out of contract at Old Trafford this summer.

Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata are all into the final months of their current terms.
