Man United backed to submit new Antony bid after journalist’s update – pundit
Man United may make a new offer for Ajax star Antony worth ‘£80million’.
That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the club’s hunt for a new attacker.
According to the Daily Mirror (18 August), Man United have seen a £67.6million bid for long-term target Antony rejected by Ajax as they desperately search for attacking reinforcements
Journalist Fabrizio Romano updated on Friday (19 August), claiming the Old Trafford club “are not giving up” on the Brazil international as they feel he “really wants” the move
The winger, who is under contract until June 2025, scored 12 goals in 33 games last term and has started the new campaign with two goals in three outings.
McLeish claims Man United may return with a higher bid worth nearer £80million.
“To any normal person, it seems too much,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“If you are buying a player for £80million, he has to be the real deal. The recruitment team have to be 100%.
“Over the years, analysts get to know players like Antony through watching the other European leagues.
“They are on a list where there is a risk assessment about whether the deal would be good for the club or not.
“Sometimes that happens, someone who comes in for a big fee absolutely bombs. This is where the recruitment team have to be 100% spot on.”

Antony made 32 appearances for Ajax across all competitions during the 2021-22 season, scoring 12 goals and providing ten assists as his side won the title.
He joined the Dutch giants from Sao Paulo in February 2020 after coming through the Brazilian side’s academy.
