Man United blasted over another transfer mistake – ‘they would kill to have this player at the club’

Manchester United have been criticised for making yet another big transfer mistake over the summer.

It was a window of change for Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, as he made a number of big signings as well as moving on outcasted players.

Man United brought in the likes of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo, while clearing out the ‘bomb squad’ who spent pre-season training away from the rest of the group.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were both loaned out, to Barcelona and Aston Villa respectively, with Antony completing a permanent switch to Real Betis.

Man United sold player who has discovered ‘new lease of life’

Rasmus Hojlund also left Man United over the summer, agreeing an initial loan move to Napoli, with an obligation to buy clause included in the deal.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Hojlund is an example of another mistake the Red Devils have made with player sales.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the Danish international looks to have a new lease of life with Napoli.

Hojlund has returned to form since leaving Man United, with seven goals for club and country so far this season.

Wyness added that United “would kill” to have the striker back at the club, as well as former midfielder Scott McTominay who is also thriving in Naples.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s just another example of things Man United have got wrong.

“You’re looking at McTominay and Hojlund doing really well for Napoli, getting great new leases of life and performing well together. United would have killed for that sort of duo right now.

“If they hadn’t been at United before, United would be looking to buy them right now. So yes, it’s another symptom of things that aren’t going right.

“There’s a lot of cast-offs from United that will turn out to be very good players. They weren’t silly to have bought them, but they were silly to have bought them, given the systems they were going to play them in.

“So that’s the issue for United. Hojlund is another example of a quality player who did not get given the right chances or they didn’t persevere with him long enough at United to let him prove himself.”

Man United to block further exits in January

Meanwhile, Man United will do everything they can to block Kobbie Mainoo’s exit in January, in order to avoid a repeat of the Hojlund situation.

Mainoo wasn’t allowed to leave Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, despite pushing hard for a move away.

The 20-year-old is currently behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro in the pecking order under Amorim.

However, the Red Devils are still keen to keep hold of their academy graduate, to ensure they don’t let another talented player slip through their fingers.
