Man United news: Finance guru shreds hypocritical statement – ‘This absolutely shouldn’t happen’

It would be a “contradiction” for Uefa to award places in the Champions League to the likes of Man United based on historic merit.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the ruling body’s plans for Europe’s top club competition.

Uefa want to hand out two places in an expanded 36-team format based on clubs’ 10-year coefficients rather than on season-by-season performance.

But they announced last Thursday (21 April) their support for the anti-Super League Win it on the Pitch scheme, which lists a commitment to sporting merit among its key tenets.

Critics argue that the Champions League reforms are the Super League in all but name and would further insulate the richest clubs from failure.

Plumley predicted that it would be no surprise to see the plans go through even after Uefa’s seemingly hypocritical stance towards Super League.

“It’d be a bit of contradiction but it would be no surprise to see it go through anyway,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider.

“This is where we are at with modern football at the minute. If Uefa are supporting that initiative, it absolutely shouldn’t happen.

“The vote is scheduled for 10 May. That is when we will find out if it is going to be ratified or not.

“I don’t think it’s the right way to. If it does go through, it further outlines where the power lies in European football.”

United turned over £464m in 2020-21, according to their most recent accounts.

But they have struggled on the pitch this season and look set to miss out on a Champions League place.
