Man United close to ‘disaster’ amid ‘huge’ Marcel Sabitzer claim – expert

Erik ten Hag has helped Man United avoid “disaster” this season by moving quickly to replace the injured Christian Eriksen with a loan move for Marcel Sabitzer.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The Red Devils made a late move for Bayern Munich midfielder Sabitzer on deadline day, signing the 28-year-old to a six-month loan deal.

The deal was completed swiftly after Man United learned of Eriksen’s injury that is set to keep him on the sidelines until April or early May.

The Dane suffered an ankle injury following a challenge from Andy Carroll during the FA Cup clash against Reading last week.

Dinnery believes that Sabitzer’s arrival will be a “huge boost” for Ten Hag given his aspirations at Old Trafford.

“Erik ten Hag is not only considering the here-and-now but also how his team is going to cope physically over the next few weeks,” Dinnery told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

It would be a disaster for Man United to pick up another injury to a midfield player or for someone like Scott McTominay to pick up a suspension had they not recruited.

Ten Hag has aspirations of pushing Man United back to where they belong and the Marcel Sabitzer signing is part of that by ensuring he has enough depth and quality to maintain their push for the Champions League.

“The injury to Eriksen is major so picking up another midfielder is a huge boost in the midst of what is a very unforgiving schedule list for Manchester United.

Given the fairly unique skill set that Christian Eriksen had brought to United and the way they’ve been playing, he’s probably been one of their standout performers over the season.
