‘Man United could pay Marcus Rashford over £8m to join Barcelona’

Man United could be forced to pay Marcus Rashford over £8million if the winger joins Barcelona this summer.

Having lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham, the Red Devils’ finances have come under further scrutiny.

Minority owner Jim Ratcliffe conducted a series of high-profile interviews in April and claimed the club were struggling financially.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider in May that Man United were “nowhere near” going bust, but he did stress the importance of winning the Europa League, which they failed to do.

Without the benefit of the revenue garnered from featuring in European competition next season, Man United will likely be operating on a restricted transfer budget and face the proposition of the windfall from their much-needed Rashford departure cut down significantly.

Barcelona interested in signing Marcus Rashford

La Liga champions Barca, via their sporting director, Deco, have confirmed the club are interested in giving Rashford his dream move to the Nou Camp.

However, whilst the Catalan giants may be Champions League semi-finalists and champions of Spain, they have struggled financially in recent years after a series of questionable investments.

Dani Olmo briefly became available on a free transfer in January, due to La Liga revoking his registration license.

If Rashford were to join, his wages would be a major issue. The 27-year-old has no desire to take a pay cut according to The Independent, and Barcelona would likely struggle to meet his current wage demands.

Marcus Rashford departure could cost Man United £8.1million

Should Rashford depart for Barcelona this summer, United may be forced to bear the brunt of paying off a portion of his £375,000-a-week wages [MailOnline] to make him affordable for any takers, least of all preferred his preferred destination.

As such, the winger could take a reduced wage with his parent club covering the difference.

If Barcelona were to offer Rashford a deal even worth £150,000-a-week, that would leave a deficit of £225,000-a-week from his current pay.

The winger still has three years remaining on his current deal, which expires in June 2028, making that deficit of £225,000-a-week across three years worth £8.1m.

Whilst United are looking to receive a fee of around £40m for their banished star, losing over £8m of that figure will be a bitter pill to swallow, given the club’s perilous financial position, and only highlight yet another error made in agreeing such a mammoth deal.
