Finance guru tips Man United to shell out ‘£1billion’ as ‘historic’ talks begin

Man United could spend up to £1billion on a brand new state-of-the-art stadium.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about possible plans to knock down Old Trafford.

The Daily Mail reported last Monday (14 March) that building an entirely new stadium is one of three options currently being discussed by the club.

A revamp of Old Trafford’s South Stand and a makeover of the stadium’s hospitality facilities have also been mooted.

Plumley used Tottenham’s stadium opened in 2019 to estimate how much the Glazers could sanction for an entirely new stadium project.

“It’s tough to benchmark as you have to look at what’s been and gone,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Spurs was the most recent one. The total cost was estimated at around £1billion in total. That’s the best figure to go off at the moment.

“But it is hard because this isn’t an exact science. You could also chuck in the Everton development, but I think Spurs is the one you would look to.

“So we could be talking at the top end of hundreds of millions if not low billions for something historic like this.

“Could Man United afford it with the way the finances of the club are structured? Probably, but the total cost is going to be expensive.

“It might not be the number one option because it’s down to the owners.”

United are understood to want to raise capacity at Old Trafford to beyond 80,000.

The stadium, which currently seats 76,000 spectators, has been the Red Devils’ home since 1910.
