‘Man United worry emerges amid Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Viktor Gyokeres news’

Man United’s financial welfare has been questioned as the Red Devils are set to turn their attention towards Dominic Calvert-Lewin after missing out on Viktor Gyokeres.

Ruben Amorim must utilise the summer transfer window to strengthen his attack after striker Rasmus Hojlund scored just four goals in 32 Premier League appearances last season.

Consequently, the Old Trafford giants had eyed a move for Gyokeres, who has established himself as one of the best goalscorers in European football during his time with Sporting.

However, Arsenal are set to sign Gyokeres, reducing the number of attacking options Man United have to choose from in the transfer market.

Man United warned they don’t have the funds for a rebuild amid Calvert-Lewin interest

While Man United are set to miss out on Gyokeres’ signature, Calvert-Lewin is available on a free transfer this summer after his contract with Everton expired.

According to talkSPORT [6 July], Amorim’s men are weighing up a move for the former Sheffield United man who scored three goals in 26 Premier League appearances last season.

But speaking live on talkSPORT [6 July], former Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew warned: “I don’t think Man United fans are going to be happy with that and certainly as a neutral I would suspect that is a move made maybe with financial implications.

“They have not got the money to compete for Gyokeres, and forget about the ambition of Arsenal or whether the player would have liked to have gone to Arsenal or Man United.

“Forget about that equation. It doesn’t look like they’ve got the funds, maybe, to do the kind of rebuild that they need, which is a worry.”

Calvert-Lewin alone cannot solve Amorim’s problems

Man United suffered a poor season last term, which was epitomised by the fact that they were beaten by fellow Premier League strugglers Tottenham in the Europa League final, and finished 15th in the top flight.

Meanwhile, transfer target Calvert-Lewin has suffered a long history of injuries throughout his time with former club Everton, which is a worry for Amorim’s men.

However, the 28-year-old’s signature is also arguably relatively risk-free because he can sign for Man United on a free transfer, and is a goal threat when he is fit.

But after finishing just 15th in the Premier League last season, the Old Trafford club are vying to restore former glories, which is not a task that Calvert-Lewin can deliver alone.

His presence would provide more competition for Hojlund, which could help the 22-year-old perform better in the Premier League, but as alluded to by Pardew, the former Everton man’s arrival would not appease the expectant Man United fan base.
