Sources: Man United close in on Michael Edwards deal after ‘huge offer’

Man United are well placed to agree a deal with Michael Edwards regardless of a potential takeover, sources have told Football Insider.

This site broke the news on 1 October that United are confident of beating Chelsea to the appointment of the former Liverpool transfer guru.

Football Insider understands that United remain well on course to finalise terms with Edwards and will wait until next summer for him to join.

Talks are set to advance regardless of the growing uncertainty behind the scenes at the club.

United announced earlier this week they are up for sale as the Glazer family seek the biggest deal in football history.

It is believe the takeover process, which is expected to be a long and complicated one, will have no bearing on the outcome of negotiations with Edwards.

The Premier League giants have made up their minds that Edwards is the right man to oversee their transfer business after so many expensive mistakes in the past and have submitted what is believed to be a “hugely attractive offer” to him.

The architect of Liverpool’s outstanding transfer business in the Jurgen Klopp era is currently on a sabbatical and is taking a year out.

He left Anfield at the end of last season after 11 years and is said to be keen on a new challenge.

United are looking to bring in a new sporting director to head up their new recruitment team have made Edwards their top target.

He has also been the subject of multiple approaches from Chelsea, but has made it clear he does not want to interrupt his sabbatical for an early return to top-level football.

It has been suggested this week that Edwards could make a sensational return to Liverpool, with his predecessor and former number two Julian Ward stepping down at the end of the season.

But that is not believed to be a realistic possibility.
