Man United fans gutted after Cristiano Ronaldo latest – expert
Noel Whelan has insisted Cristiano Ronaldo will not “tarnish his legacy” at Man United even if he forces an Old Trafford exit for the second time.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Red Devils supporters may even understand the 37-year-old’s position as he prepares to leave after an underwhelming 2021-22 campaign.
According to The Athletic (5 July), Ronaldo has missed a second consecutive day of Man United’s pre-season training – just days after informing the club of his desire to leave this summer.

The report claims the forward, who is under contract until June 2023, is wanted by Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Napoli.
The footballing icon forced through a world-record transfer from Man United to Real Madrid in 2009.
Whelan insisted the Old Trafford faithful won’t hold it against Ronaldo even if he departs for the second time.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think it will tarnish his legacy.
“I think if you ask many Man United supporters about where their club is right now – they’ll be responding in a very disappointed manner.
“I believe they’ll actually understand Ronaldo’s position. With the performances they’ve put in and where they have been in recent years – they were very lucky to have him back at all.
“You can’t say he didn’t do his bit. He was top scorer, he got them through in the Champions League – but top players want to play in the best competition.
“I’m sure Ronaldo came in thinking it was going to be the same as when he first signed. He went back for love, and unfortunately for him it is a completely different club.

“You could see the frustration all over his face after some games last season. This must have been a really difficult period for him, and he may well have seen enough.
“I don’t think the fans will hold that against him. They’ll understand where he is coming from, I’m sure.”
